Drawing Tool Window

The drawing tool is used to paint the map with terrain, locations, bridges, roads, and other features. There are three buttons in drawing mode:

  1. Pick Draw Type. This starts the drawing process and opens the Select Paint Type window, which is described below.
  2. Go to Fill/Draw Mode. Draw Mode allows the terrain in one hex to be modified one hex at a time. Fill Mode allows a set of contiguous hex hexes to modified all at once. The specific behavior of Fill Mode depends on the particular object being painted.
  3. End Drawing Mode. When map painting is completed, it is important to press this button to end paint mode. If this button is not pressed, and accidental painting may occur. (If Fill Mode is on, an accidental click can be quite time consuming to fix if the scenario was not saved.)

Select Paint Type Window

When the Pick Draw Type button is clicked, the Select Paint Type Window appears. This window will have two boxes, as shown below. To begin using the drawing tool, choose one objects in the first box, which is labelled What?. The choice of object in the What? box. will determine the name of the second box, whether a third box appears, and the behavior of Fill Mode. These are describe below

The What? Box

To begin drawing, click on one of the eight objects in the What? Box:

  1. Landscapes. This tool allows the map to be painted with terrain. The possible landscape types that can be painted are in the second box.(To add a new landscape type, refer to the description of the land window.) To paint the map with terrain a landscape type from the second must be selected, and then an image in the third Sprites box will need to be selected as well. Once the landscape and sprite have been selected, the draw tool can be used. When in Fill Mode, a click on a particular hex will fill all hexes with the old landscape type with a new landscape type. (See landscape fill example.) Rivers do not block a fill.
  2. Roads. This button allows the building of roads. When this object is chosen, the second box will show the available roads. Pick the road to be added. To create a road, right click on the first hex where the road is mean to start, this turns on the drawing mode. Then left click on an adjacent hex where the road is meant to go. The road will appear, crossing the hexside shared by the current hex and the previous hex. Keep left clicking on adjacent hexes until the road is complete. To erase a road, just reverse the process. Right click on the road to be erased, then left click on the hex the road continues into. To get out of road drawing mode, just left click on any hex that is not adjacent to the last hex that had been clicked while in drawing mode. (See road creation example.) If the road crosses a river, a bridge will need to be added (see below). Fill Mode cannot be used with this option.
  3. Regimes. This button allows a regime to own a hex. When this object is chosen, the second box shows the available regimes. They name of all regimes available will appear in the second box. (To add a new regime, refer to the description of the regimes window.) Pick the regime that is supposed to own a particular hex, then click on the hex and it will be owned by the regime. Fill mode for this object will change every contiguous land hex into one that is owned by the selected regime.
  4. LocType. This button allows the placement of special locations, such as towns, cities, factories, and resources. The second box shows available locations types that can be placed on the map. (To add a new location type, refer to the description of the location type window.) Because each location is unique, Fill Mode cannot be used with this option.
  5. Rivers. This button allows the building of rivers on hexsides. When this object is chosen, the second box will show the available rivers. Pick the river to be added. To create a river, right click a hex that will have a river on its hexside, this turns on the drawing mode. Then left click on an adjacent hex, the river will then appear on the hexside shared by the two hexes. Keep left clicking on adjacent hexes until the river is complete. To erase a river, just reverse the process. First, right click on the hex that has the river hexside to be erased, then left click on the adjacent hex that shares the river. To get out of road drawing mode, just left click on any hex that is not adjacent to the last hex that had been clicked while in drawing mode. (See the river creation example.) Fill Mode cannot be used with this option.
  6. Bridge. This button allows the building of bridges. Bridges are built just like roads, though they can be built across rivers even where there are no roads. In addition, a road does not automatically come with a bridge, it must be built using this button. When this object is chosen, the second box will show the available bridges. Pick the bridge to be added. To create a bridge, right click on the first hex where the road is mean to start, this turns on the drawing mode. Then left click on an adjacent hex where the road is meant to go. To erase a road, reverse the process. Right click on the bridge to be erased, then left click on the hex the bridge continues into. To get out of bridge drawing mode, just left click on any hex that is not adjacent to the last hex that had been clicked while in drawing mode. (See bridge creation example.) Fill Mode cannot be used with this option.
  7. Slots. This button is for special, user-designed items. [This description needs to be expanded]
  8. Specials. This button paints a hex like a certain terrain type, but leaves the underlying terrain the same as it was before the paint. (i.e., it paints a hex to look like a jungle, even though it functions in the game like a high mountain). It can also be used to overpaint more than one style of landscape on a hex. (i.e., special allows a landscape type representing a border to be overpainted on a field hex.) Hexes are painted using the same procedure describe in Landscape. Be careful with Fill Mode, however: It will fill all contiguous land hexes of all kinds with the selected terrain. [Is this description correct?]
